| Old Friends Band
line-up, caller and range of instruments |
Peter
Corkill began
playing
fiddle in the North East with the Alnwick Pipers. He attended the
early Dr Tom Anderson workshops in Stirling and was given guidance by
Willie Taylor. After 13 years of non-playing he was inspired to relearn
with Carolyn Francis and the Lakeland Fiddlers, before joining Old
Friends.
John Hazlehurst is a fine, well-respected,
Anglo concertina player, as well as playing
Northumbrian small-pipes and harmonica. He also writes a good many
tunes and has
produced a
book of many of them, with illustrations, called Phizacklea's Fandangle,
available from
Corylus Publications.
Proceeds to a publishing company in Burkina Faso, West
Africa, which published the tune book.
Gordon Jones plays rhythm
guitar. He is a founder member of former Scots band Silly Wizard,
touring with them for many years, and making innumerable recordings. He
also runs folk record label
Harbourtown Records.
Mike
Kermode: band leader, plays
wooden flute and fiddle. He also researches Lakeland tunes,
creates tune sets for dances and instrumental pieces and is a nifty
stepdancer (especially in clogs). His first Lakeland tunes book (a
collection of traditional and recently-written tunes from Cumbria) can
be obtained by emailing Mike via the contact page (see Contact above).
Stepdancer and clog tutor Deborah
Kermode calls
traditional Cumbrian, Scottish and English dances, plus some of her
own, and also vamps along on the piano.
She last year received an EFDSS 75th Anniversary Award |
Organisers of a
ceilidh north of Bassenthwaite wrote to say:
"Thank you and the rest of the band for a
brilliant evening's
entertainment. Everyone really enjoyed the music and the dances.
Thanks. Best wishes, Paul." |

Caw, what a view
Tail Crag seen from Caw, one of the Dunnerdale Fells, in
Furness. It's
great to
think that, like us, the old country fiddlers such as William Irwin,
James Lishman and Stent Robinson would have seen views like this on
their way to play at a dance. |
